Tar Heel Post

North Carolina came away with the win Tuesday night, but it was not their best outing so far. The final score was 78-64.

Wake Forest goes to Chapel Hill at 8:00 on Tuesday to face the North Carolina Tar Heels. Wake Forest is 8-17 overall and 1-9 in the ACC with their lone ACC win coming against Virginia. UNC comes in with a 18-6 record overall and they are 8-2 in the ACC.

Kendall Marshall was named ACC Rookie of the Week after another stellar week. This is the second week in a row Marshall has won this award after sharing it with Harrison Barnes last week.

The Tar Heels seem to be dominating this award since Kyrie Irving's injury. Recently, all three of the Tar Heels freshman have won the award.

Nolan Smith won the ACC Player of the Week, in large part because of his performance against the Tar Heels.

The 2011 ACC football schedule was released today, and now football fans cannot wait for fall. We have a long ways to wait.

Here are a few thoughts on the schedule:
  1. The schedule looks to be much easier than last year without a team like LSU on the schedule and the non-division conference games are much easier. The Heels will not have to face FSU this season who will likely be the pre-season favorite to win the ACC.
  2. A big key is that the Heels first three games are at home. They have a presumably easy game against James Madison, Virginia Tech may not agree, for the first game of the season. They then have their home match-up with a Rutgers team who recruited very well, against North Carolina, this past season. The last of the home-stand games, baseball term, will come against an up-and-coming Virginia Cavaliers team. It will be the first ACC match-up for the Heels, and a chance to get started on the right foot.
  3. Road games include Georgia Tech (got to be able to stop the option, Tech losing Nesbitt should help), East Carolina (Greenville will be rocking), N.C. State (got to beat them this year), Clemson (make or break for Dabo Swinney), and the game mentioned in my next point.
  4. Virginia Tech at Blacksburg. Prime-time. Thursday night Nov. 17.  Next to last game of the season. Coastal Division possibly on the line. Need I say more.
  5. The only non-conference game not mentioned, yet, is against Louisville. The Cardinals are the replacement team after Tennessee paid their way out of a series with North Carolina. What a rematch that would have been.
  6. The Heels finally get to face Wake Forest in the first meeting between the two schools since 2007. Wake should be improved from last year, but you can not help but think this game makes the schedule easier.

In an ugly matchup between the Tar Heels and the Tigers, the Heels came out on top in the end by a score of 64-62. There were two huge plays at the end of the game when Harrison Barnes posterized Milton Jennings and Kendall Marshall stole the ball and took it to the basket for a score. It took free throws to put away the Tigers as they caught on fire and hit 3 long three-pointers at the end.

The Tar Heels roll into Little John Coliseum on Saturday to face the Clemson Tigers. The game will start at 1:00. This is a big game for the Tar Heels as they cannot afford to lose two in a row. Clemson will be a tough matchup at Little John. Clemson has won four out of their last five games and come in fourth in the ACC standings. According to CBS Sports RPI, Clemson has an RPI of 63 while UNC comes in 15th.

The Music City Bowl is in the past. National Signing Day is over. North Carolina football fans: what can you watch for? Here are five ideas:
  1. A new defensive line coach: Butch Davis will be hiring a new defensive line coach soon. The Heels have gone through three defensive line coaches this year. The first one was John Blake who was replaced by Charlie Coiner who was replaced by Brian Baker. It has not been a good year on the defensive line.

The newest edition of the the Music City Miracle, not to be confused with the Titans-Bills NFL version, might cause a rule change. The NCAA Football Rules Committee is likely to put into effect a 10-second runoff for offensive penalties at the end of each half just like the NFL has.

In other words, North Carolina would have never won the Music City Bowl. When the field goal team ran onto the field and T.J. Yates snapped the ball, the flag was thrown for too many men on the field. Under the proposed rule, the 10-seconds would have been runoff and the game would have been over.

Perhaps, it is a good rule, but it takes nothing away from what Butch Davis' team did in Nashville. Not only did they have an amazing comeback, but it was truly one of the most remarkable events you will ever see.

Game over.

Well, maybe not, the rule still has to be approved.
