Well, it was not as much of a surprise if you follow recruiting analysts on Twitter, but as of two days ago UNC was not even on Simmons list and he had not officially visited. Things change quickly.
Around 11:15 AM today, Simmons picked North Carolina over USC and Oregon, among others, in what will likely wrap-up the Heels class. Simmons is a huge pick-up. Due to his recent performance in the U.S. Army All-American Game, Simmons climbed up to a five-star on Scout.com.

I watched some of the U.S. Army game, and Simmons was definitely impressive. My thoughts were "man, I wish he was going to be in Carolina blue." He really played well, and showed some speed and ability to get to the quarterback. It seemed that he was always creating havoc in the backfield. He got credit for two sacks in the game, a very good number.
On Rivals.com, Simmons is a four-star and fifth best defensive tackle. On ESPN, he is the 25th best defensive tackle, surprisingly, since he has played so well recently and was even mentioned as playing well in recent ESPN articles.
